Telecommunications Regulatory Authority appointed Vice-Chair of Online Child Protection

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) was appointed Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council Working Group on Child Online Protection. The appointment recognizes the TRA’s years of advocacy for the online safety of children. In this role, the TRA will cultivate international collaboration, facilitate the exchange of insights, and advance the development of tools and technologies aimed at safeguarding children on the Internet.

TRA Acting Manager of Online Safety, May Al Ghatam, said: “This appointment is a testament to the Kingdom of Bahrain's pioneering work in protecting children and combating Online exploitation. It also highlights the TRA’s long history in this critical domain and its potential to make significant contributions towards strengthening international collaboration.”


She added: “In an era defined by rapid technological change, children face online threats like never before, including bullying, electronic fraud, exposure to inappropriate content, harassment, and more. To address these concerns, the TRA has worked diligently to safeguard children and raise awareness on how to deal with such challenges.”


The Council Working Group on Child Online Protection, along with other expert groups within the ITU, is comprised of an international network of industry professionals dedicated to developing policies and guidelines on child online safety and promoting information sharing. With the primary objective of raising awareness, the group devises effective strategies to prevent and mitigate the risks children face online.
